THE EVENT

POCOLA, OK (May 6th , 2017) – The third points race of the season at the legendary Tri-State Speedway was a remarkable difference in weather conditions at the famous high banks in Pocola, OK from what we’ve been  facing the last several weeks. With temps in the low 80’s, the track prep crew was able to perform a little magic in order to get the track into a raceable condition for the fans and drivers, despite the previous two weeks of rain.

The pre-race ceremonies of the invocation, along with a memorial reading honoring the late Danny Martinez, Jr., and the National Anthem, for the evening started at 8 PM. During the National Anthem, police vehicles from several local agencies and the track ambulance, along with drivers wishing to show their support and respect, made a few memorial laps, to a standing ovation, in honor of the fallen Fort Smith Police Department officer and fellow racer who was tragically killed in the line of duty, just over 10 years ago.

The race program started with heat races for all five classes. Heat race lineups for all classes, except the IMCA Modifieds, were determined by the driver’s draw at sign in. The IMCA Modifieds followed the published rules for that class. The classes, that drew for their starting heat position, advanced to their features via their finish in their heats. Plus, the last heat winner drew a number for the number of cars to invert for the A Feature.

At intermission at about 9:30 PM, everyone had a chance to grab themselves one of the new “Tommy burgers” and other hot food that Audrey and her crew had cooking on the grill and get some cool beverages into their system. Also, due to the trophy shop not making the correct number of trophies the last time we raced, the winners from those races that were on hand had their trophies presented to them.

TOP THREE

The first race on the track after intermission was the USRA B-Mods for their A Feature that saw Stephen Muilenburg (39 – Sparta, MO) break the winning streak for Hunter Byers (88B – Rogers, AR) who crossed the line in second ahead of Chad Summerford (03 - Centerton, AR) in third.

Next up was the Pure Stocks for their A Feature where Wesley Bourne (5 – Cameron, OK) took the win for his second of the year as Adam Gipson (20 – Lavaca, AR) who was nipping on his heels and Jacob Cox (99 - Pocola, OK) followed in second and third, respectively.

Next was the IMCA Modified A Feature where Kayden Menasco (49 – Muldrow, OK) captured the checkers for the first time this season over Jason Payton (6 – Greenwood, AR) as Stephen Muilenburg (39 – Sparta, MO) finished in third.

The next feature on the track was for the Super Stocks. Grant Davis (1 – Muldrow, OK) picked up the win over a strong Dylan Davlin (26H – Shady Point, OK). Brandon Henry (8H – Ozark, AR) finished in third place.

The USRA Modified A Feature was the last on the track next and saw Brandon Hunter (1/4 – Alma, AR) take home first place finish of the year over a charging Jeremy Vaughn (8 – Pocola, OK) and the previous week’s winner, Trevor Latham (27L – Rogers, AR).

All race results, including heats, are available on the website, as well as current track point standings.

UPCOMING EVENTS:

• $1,500 to win 100 lap Enduro with the first appearance of the Southern Outlaw Late Model Series along with a full night of point racing on May 13th, 2017

• 1st Annual Super Stock Triple Threat Weekend on Memorial Day Weekend with live streaming coverage by FloRacing with $300 to start and $3,000 to win the Super Stock A Feature on Friday, Saturday and Sunday brought to you, in part, by Bravado Wireless.

There have been a few minor clarifications and changes to the regular weekly race procedures under our General Rules. These changes have been made at the request of the drivers and to present a more entertaining show for our fans.

For all classes except IMCA Modifieds, the drivers will now draw for their heat racing positions and will qualify from those heats to their features in a "heads up" format. The last heat race winner will stop at the end of the front straight, after their cool down lap, and will draw an invert number from the line up person. The possible number of cars to be inverted for the A Feature will either by 2, 4, 6, 8 or 10 cars. There will never be more than five row of cars inverted.

There will be no change for the IMCA Modifieds, as their line ups are determined by IMCA rules.

The other clarifications concern lap cars and double file restarts. As listed in the general rules, lap cars will be placed tailback at the next restart. This has been in the rules all along, but is being re-emphasized, at this time.

On all races, except heats, we will utilize the Delaware X double file restart system for every restart until there are less than three laps remaining. This would be a green, white, checkered flag finish of two laps. In that scenario, the restart will be single file for the last two laps only. If during a feature a restart cannot be successfully completed, by making a complete lap, in two tries, the race will be restarted single file. However, once a race is restarted single file, with the exception of only two laps left, we will return to the double file restart.

The Delaware X restart system places the lead car on the front row by theirself. The second place car will choose either the inside or outside starting position of the second row with the third place car taking the other position. The fourth place car will always start on the inside of row three with the rest of the field "xing" into positions behind them in an inside outside fashion.

In a related note, on initial race starts, if the cars cannot successfully start the race by taking a green flag, the front two rows will be inverted and re-attempted. If after several unsuccessful attempts to initially start a race double file, the track officials, at their discretion, may choose to start a race in a single file lineup. This does not affect race restarts, only the initial start of the race.

We hope these clarifications and changes will provide a more exciting racing experience for our fans and provide better racing for our drivers. These changes will take effect with the 10th Annual Danny Martinez, Jr. Memorial Races and Law Enforcement, EMT/Paramedics and Fire Fighter's night on May 6th, 2017. Remember, pit gates and grandstands now open at 5 PM. Driver sign in ends at 7 PM with the driver's meeting taking place at that time. Hot laps will start at 7:30 PM and racing is scheduled to start at 8 PM each night, unless otherwise posted.

This weekend at Tri-State Speedway is the 10th Annual Danny Martinez, Jr. Memorial Races. It is also Law Enforcement, EMT and Firefighters night. All of the above will get in FREE with identification this weekend! Limit one person per ID.
For those that do not know the story about Danny, the following is a brief summary.
Officer Daniel C. Martinez Jr., 33, had been with the Fort Smith Police Department for eight months when on March 23, 2007, he was dispatched to responded to a call to help a desperate mother get her 3yr old child from a residence where she had a run in with her ex-boyfriend earlier in the day.
The ex-boyfriend had been arrested and the mother had returned to pick up her child. She met Officer Martinez in the parking lot. They went to the front door and the brother of the man arrested earlier answered and told them to wait a minute, then shut the door. He returned with a 9 mm handgun and shot Officer Martinez, then shot the mother in the back, shoulder, and elbow as she fled.
The shooter fled from the home in a car and killed himself before Oklahoma Highway Patrol officers found him near Spiro, Oklahoma.
Officer Martinez had served for several years with the Poteau Police Department, Panama Police Department, Shady Point Police Department, and Wister Police Department, all of which are in Oklahoma. He joined the Fort Smith Police Department on July 3, 2006. He is survived by his wife Alice and five children.
Not only was Danny a revered and well respected police officer but he was also a life-long race fan and later became a racer right here with us at Tri-State Speedway. He was also in the process of building a car to race with us just over nine years ago when he was tragically killed.
Please come out and support not only the memory of Danny, but come out and help us raise funds for the Officer Daniel C. Martinez Memorial Scholarship Fund, which is was founded in 2007 and is sponsored by the River Valley Marine Corp League Detachment # 1248 in Fort Smith, Arkansas.
The scholarship is open to college students who demonstrate a financial need. Scholarship applicants must have maintained a 3.0 grade-point average, but can be studying any college major. The scholarship fund awarded it's first scholarship in 2014.
The goal of the scholarship is to eventually make this a full-ride scholarship to cover tuition, books and room and board. It is awarded by the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith which will decide on a recipient each semester.
Don't forget that all donations are tax deductible. If paying by check, please make donations payable to: "UA Fort Smith Foundation" or "FSP Officer Martinez Memorial Scholarship" and on the memo line please include: "Officer Martinez Memorial Endowment Scholarship".

 THE EVENT

POCOLA, OK (April 22nd , 2017) – The second points race of the season at the legendary Tri-State Speedway saw us once again doing battle with Mother Nature at the famous high banks in Pocola, OK for a night to race that was free of rain. Fortunately, race day was free from precipitation and even though it was overcast for most of the day with temps in the 50’s, the track prep crew, along with volunteers, were able to get the track into a raceable condition for the fans and drivers.

The pre-race ceremonies of the invocation and the National Anthem, for the evening started at 8 PM, which is now the scheduled start time, due to Daylight Savings Time and the forthcoming summer heat.

The race program started with heat races for all five classes on hand. Heat race lineups were determined by the driver’s season point average, which is the number of points earned divided by the number of races they’ve competed in. Those averages are then inverted so the fastest cars start at the back of their heats with any new cars, or cars without an average, behind them.

At intermission at about 9:00 PM, everyone had a chance to grab themselves one of the new “Tommy burgers” and other hot food that Audrey and her crew had cooking on the grill and get some hot liquid beverages into their system. Also, due to the trophy shop being closed last weekend, last weekend’s winners were presented their trophies.

TOP THREE

The first race on the track after intermission was the USRA B-Mods for their A Feature that saw Hunter Byers (88B – Rogers, AR) win for the second week in a row as Jacob Stoll (12 – Mounds, OK) crossed the line in second ahead of Steve Butler (40 – Siloam Springs, AR) in third.

Next up was the Pure Stocks for their A Feature where Dustin Bell (18B – Atkins, AR) took the win as Adam Gipson (20 – Lavaca, AR) and Dennis Slader (19 – Muskogee, OK) followed in second and third, respectively.

Next was the IMCA Modified A Feature where Drew Armstrong (01A - Alexander, AR) captured the checkers over Chuck Bumgarner (55 – Muskogee, OK) as Michael Hines (57M – Van Buren, AR), finished in third.

The next feature on the track was for the Super Stocks. Kyle Slader (19S – Muskogee, OK) only led for about 50 yards, but it was the most important as it was the last 50 yards to pick up the win over last weekend’s winner, Ty Evans (5E -Fort Smith, AR). Tyler Hopson (333 – Fort Gibson, OK) finished in third place.

The USRA Modified A Feature was the last on the track next and saw Trevor Latham (27L – Rogers, AR) exert his dominance with a strong first place finish over Brandon Hunter (1/4 – Alma, AR) and a hard-charging Steve Holzkamper (5 – Gentry, AR) who drove his machine from a 12th place starting position to end up in third.

Complete A Feature results for the event are listed on our website. All race results, including heats, will be available soon. Current track point standings (top three in each class) are available there, as well, with full class points coming soon.

After our first couple of races this season, the Pure Stock class has been showing us the numbers! As a result, we are paying them back with an increased weekly payout!

Starting with the April 22nd, 2017 weekly point races, the Pure Stocks will now be paid the following: 1 - 350, 2 - 175, 3 - 150, 4 - 125, 5 - 100, 6 – 85, 7 – 70, 8 – 60, 9 – 50, 10 – 15 – 40, 16 - 20 – 35. As with our other classes, if there are less than 11 cars for that sign in, the pay will start at second place.

Also with the Pure Stock class, there is now a driveline (engine, transmission, rear end, tires, wheels, brakes, shocks) protest fee of $175. This can be done by any driver who finishes on the lead lap of the A Feature and has run two consecutive weeks at Tri-State Speedway in that class. In the event that two drivers are protesting the same car, the driver who finished lowest and on the lead lap, will get to protest. The fee, in cash, must be taken to the tech man BEFORE the green flag drops. If your car's being protested, you will be told by track officials that you must report to tech immediately after your race and before going to the pit areas. If the car that is found to be legal, the protest fee will go to that driver for gaskets, seals, oil, etc. to put things back together with. If the car is found to be illegal, the protest fee will be returned and the driver that is found to be illegal will be disqualified and will lose all points and money earned for the night.. Revisions may be made to this rule, if needed, and will be updated here and on our social media pages, as well as the rules for the class. If you have any questions on what is legal or not, please contact the tech man, Wendell Vaughn, after 5 PM, at 918.721.4552. Complete Pure Stock clss rules are available here.

POCOLA, OK (April 15th, 2017) – The first points race of the 47th consecutive year of racing at the legendary Tri-State Speedway had 78 cars battling it out on the famous high banks for their head start towards the big prize at the end of the season. We'll see YOU on Saturday, April 15th!

Due to an unexpected scheduling conflict with the Southern Outlaw Late Model Series, their scheduled race for this coming Saturday, April 8th, 2017 at Tri-State Speedway has been rescheduled to May 13th, 2017. This date will also be the first $1,500 to win 100 lap Enduro, so this will be a night you definitely want to attend.

As a result of that postponement and us having to move the recently completed 38th Annual Cecil Harlan Memorial Kegger forward one week from the original schedule, Tri-State Speedway will be CLOSED this coming Saturday, April 8th, 2017. The first track points race of the season will be on Saturday, April 15th, 2017.

Please make these notes on your schedules and let all of your friends and family know about these changes.

POCOLA, OK (March 30th, 31st and April 1st) – The 47th consecutive year of racing at the legendary Tri-State Speedway got off to a rocky start Mother Nature playing her always available trump card to our scheduled activities. This time close to four inches of rain fell on the originally scheduled day two of this event forcing us to move the event forward one week.

But, the delay may have been a blessing in disguise. NASCAR veteran driver, Ken Schrader, who now races his Federated Auto Parts dirt modifieds was originally scheduled for the rained out weekend and was not going to be able to attend this weekend due to scheduling conflicts. However, his plans changed this weekend when his scheduled race was rained out and our weather was perfect. Not only was Ken able to race with us this weekend, but several other national-level drivers were able to attend, too, including drivers from Iowa, Wisconsin and North Dakota.

The pre-race ceremonies for day three of the 38th Annual Cecil Harlan Memorial Kegger started about 8:00 PM and included an introduction of the late Cecil Harlan’s family that were in attendance including his daughter, granddaughter and three great grandchildren.  That was followed by a memorial reading about Cecil, the invocation and memorial parade lap during the National Anthem with cars carrying the Stars and Stripes.

The race program for night number three started with B Features for the Pure Stocks, the Super Stocks, the USRA B-Mods and the USRA Modifieds. Those lineups were determined by their qualifying on night number two and any drivers trying to race their way into the big money A features.

At intermission, everyone had a chance to stretch their legs, make any needed pit stops at the restrooms, buy a limited edition Kegger T-shirt or hoodie from Kevin and the Cuztom Graphics guys and get one of the new track burgers that Audrey and her crew had cooking on the grill.

The first race on the track after intermission was the Pure Stock for their 25 lap A Feature where Rick Edgerton (27 – Fort Smith, AR) took the win as Austin Farnam (119 – Fort Smith, AR) was a very close second and Dennis Slader (19 – Muskogee, OK) in third.

Up next were the USRA B-Mods for their A Feature that saw Stephen Muilenburg (39 – Sparta, MO) secure the victory over a hard-charging Dean Green (28 – Siloam Springs, AR). Daniel Tarkington (2 – Checotah, OK) brought his machine home for a third-place finish.

Next was the IMCA Modified A Feature where Kelly Shryock (3 – Fertile, IA) showed why he’s won multiple national championships with the win. Jeff James (71 - Stanton, IA) crossed the finish line ahead of Ken Schrader (9 – Concord, NC) who finished in third.

The next feature on the track was for the Super Stocks. Robby Arnold (60 – Paragould, AR) had it set on “win” from the start as was able to out run Tony Anglin (G1 – Walnut Ridge, AR) and Kyle Davis (4 – Siloam Spring, AR) who finished in second and third respectively.

The USRA Modified A Feature was the last on the track next and saw Ken Schrader (9 – Concord, NC) survive a few challenges for the win. Chad Wheeler (88 – Muskogee, OK) finished in second ahead of Brian Williams (26 – Fayetteville, AR) in third.

Our new promoter, Tommy New, has now taken over the reins completely and is looking forward to an awesome 2017 season, which will officially kick off with the racing action with the 38th Annual Cecil Harlan Memorial Kegger. More information on this event is available on this site and via our social media channels on Facebook, Twitter and Google+.

Due to forecasted rain, the Annual Car Show and Play Day date has been changed to Sunday, March 19th,2017 from 1 PM to 4 PM with open practice to follow from 5 PM to 8 PM on the famous high banks in Pocola, Oklahoma.

With the car show being at the race track and no paved areas, we don't want our fans to have to walk around in muddy conditions and rain to see their favorite cars and drivers.

The movement of the date will also allow the drivers an extra week to get their cars finished and ready to show. There will be a Best of Show award, as well as top three awards for each of the five classes. Concessions will be provided throughout the day.

We would like to officially welcome Tommy New to the Tri-State Speedway family. Tommy will be taking over the reigns as the promoter at the legendary facility in Pocola, OK.
Tommy is from Hector, AR (close to Russellville) and has raced for numerous years in the familiar blue and yellow 43N stock car. We think that he will do an outstanding job for us.
Final rules for the 2017 season will be available soon.
Please join us in welcoming Tommy!

The Tri-State Speedway 2016 Awards Ceremony and Banquet will be held on Saturday, January 7th, 2017 at the new DoubleTree by Hilton Fort Smith City Center in downtown Fort Smith at 700 Rogers Avenue. This is the old Holiday inn that has been completely remodeled from top to bottom.
The event will start at 7 PM. There will a choice of beef or chicken with sides and dessert.
Advance tickets are only $25 and $30 at the door (if any are available.)
