Byers Goes Two for Two as Bell, Armstrong, K. Slader and Latham Win First

 THE EVENT

POCOLA, OK (April 22nd , 2017) – The second points race of the season at the legendary Tri-State Speedway saw us once again doing battle with Mother Nature at the famous high banks in Pocola, OK for a night to race that was free of rain. Fortunately, race day was free from precipitation and even though it was overcast for most of the day with temps in the 50’s, the track prep crew, along with volunteers, were able to get the track into a raceable condition for the fans and drivers.

The pre-race ceremonies of the invocation and the National Anthem, for the evening started at 8 PM, which is now the scheduled start time, due to Daylight Savings Time and the forthcoming summer heat.

The race program started with heat races for all five classes on hand. Heat race lineups were determined by the driver’s season point average, which is the number of points earned divided by the number of races they’ve competed in. Those averages are then inverted so the fastest cars start at the back of their heats with any new cars, or cars without an average, behind them.

At intermission at about 9:00 PM, everyone had a chance to grab themselves one of the new “Tommy burgers” and other hot food that Audrey and her crew had cooking on the grill and get some hot liquid beverages into their system. Also, due to the trophy shop being closed last weekend, last weekend’s winners were presented their trophies.

TOP THREE

The first race on the track after intermission was the USRA B-Mods for their A Feature that saw Hunter Byers (88B – Rogers, AR) win for the second week in a row as Jacob Stoll (12 – Mounds, OK) crossed the line in second ahead of Steve Butler (40 – Siloam Springs, AR) in third.

Next up was the Pure Stocks for their A Feature where Dustin Bell (18B – Atkins, AR) took the win as Adam Gipson (20 – Lavaca, AR) and Dennis Slader (19 – Muskogee, OK) followed in second and third, respectively.

Next was the IMCA Modified A Feature where Drew Armstrong (01A - Alexander, AR) captured the checkers over Chuck Bumgarner (55 – Muskogee, OK) as Michael Hines (57M – Van Buren, AR), finished in third.

The next feature on the track was for the Super Stocks. Kyle Slader (19S – Muskogee, OK) only led for about 50 yards, but it was the most important as it was the last 50 yards to pick up the win over last weekend’s winner, Ty Evans (5E -Fort Smith, AR). Tyler Hopson (333 – Fort Gibson, OK) finished in third place.

The USRA Modified A Feature was the last on the track next and saw Trevor Latham (27L – Rogers, AR) exert his dominance with a strong first place finish over Brandon Hunter (1/4 – Alma, AR) and a hard-charging Steve Holzkamper (5 – Gentry, AR) who drove his machine from a 12th place starting position to end up in third.
