THE EVENT

POCOLA, OK (May 14TH, 2016) – The sixth regular night of weekly racing saw 74 cars show up to take their turn for another bout on the famous high banks in Pocola, OK. The track prep crew had the track in shape for the racing action and the end result was a race track that was smooth, wide and fast throughout the entire night of racing.

The pre-race ceremonies kicked off with the invocation and the presentation the nation’s colors during the National Anthem by two of the drivers on hand.

First up on the agenda for the race program was heat racing for the Pure Stocks, IMCA Sport Mods, IMCA Stock Cars, IMCA Modifieds, Super Stocks and the USRA Modifieds.

The intermission was next and gave everyone a chance to make a pit stop at the restrooms and get some of the great concession food, including some world famous Menasco BBQ “brontosaurus” ribs along with a smoked and fried bologna sandwich and topped off with a funnel cake for desert.

One lucky 50/50 winner walked off with $70 for his ticket and several shirts and hats were given away from the gate admission tickets. Also, Lisa Hinton, owner of Champ Hinton Enterprises, the night’s sponsor, took a five lap ride in the Super Stock two-seater owned by Cody Jones. Be sure to check our Facebook page or YouTube channel for the live stream video of all the intermission activities.

For those that do not know the story about Danny, the following is a brief summary.

Officer Daniel C. Martinez Jr., 33, had been with the Fort Smith Police Department for eight months when on March 23, 2007, he was dispatched to responded to a call to help a desperate mother get her 3yr old child from a residence where she had a run in with her ex-boyfriend earlier in the day.

The ex-boyfriend had been arrested and the mother had returned to pick up her child. She met Officer Martinez in the parking lot. They went to the front door and the brother of the man arrested earlier answered and told them to wait a minute, then shut the door. He returned with a 9 mm handgun and shot Officer Martinez, then shot the mother in the back, shoulder, and elbow as she fled.

The shooter fled from the home in a car and killed himself before Oklahoma Highway Patrol officers found him near Spiro, Oklahoma.

Officer Martinez had served for several years with the Poteau Police Department, Panama Police Department, Shady Point Police Department, and Wister Police Department, all of which are in Oklahoma. He joined the Fort Smith Police Department on July 3, 2006. He is survived by his wife Alice and five children.

Not only was Danny a revered and well respected police officer but he was also a life-long race fan and later became a racer right here with us at Tri-State Speedway. He was also in the process of building a car to race with us just over nine years ago when he was tragically killed.

Please come out and support not only the memory of Danny, but come out and help us raise funds for the Officer Daniel C. Martinez Memorial Scholarship Fund, which is was founded in 2007 and is sponsored by the River Valley Marine Corp League Detachment # 1248 in Fort Smith, Arkansas.

The scholarship is open to college students who demonstrate a financial need. Scholarship applicants must have maintained a 3.0 grade-point average, but can be studying any college major. The scholarship fund awarded it's first scholarship in 2014.

The goal of the scholarship is to eventually make this a full-ride scholarship to cover tuition, books and room and board. It is awarded by the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith which will decide on a recipient each semester.

Don't forget that all donations are tax deductible. If paying by check, please make donations payable to:
"UA Fort Smith Foundation" or "FSP Officer Martinez Memorial Scholarship" and on the memo line please include: "Officer Martinez Memorial Endowment Scholarship".

THE EVENT

POCOLA, OK (April 16TH, 2016) – The third regular night of weekly racing, after last week’s rain shortened program, certainly was one not to be missed with close to 100 cars on hand. Mother Nature must have thought that she needed to let everyone know that she was still in charge as a few spot showers popped up in the surrounding areas just before race time, but no precipitation fell at the track. The evening’s racing was the star attraction with three and four wide racing all the way through the last feature of the night and two roll-overs, where both drivers walked away uninjured.

The pre-race ceremonies started at 6:04 PM with the invocation and a parade lap with the nation’s colors during the National Anthem. The evening kicked off with the make-up features from the previous week’s rain postponement.

TOP THREE - PART ONE

The first race was the IMCA Sport Mod A Feature which re-started on lap five, which is where the race was red-flagged due to rain. The finish saw Caden Ellis (84) capture the checkered flag ahead of 14 year-old Kayden Menasco (49K – Dora, AR) and Logan Ellis (118 – Wagoner, OK).

The next early feature was the IMCA Stock Car A Feature where Kevin Flock (9 – Muskogee, OK) crossed the line first as Mike Smith (1S – Spiro, OK) and Mike Wiseman (1 – Muskogee, OK) came across second and third, respectively,

The IMCA Modified A Feature was up next and Mike Hansen (12H - Dickinson, ND) stopped by and took home the win ahead of Tate Cole (89 – Fort Gibson, OK) and William Gould (60 – Calera, OK).

The Super Stock A Feature saw Cody Jones (92 – Fort Smith, AR) pick up the trophy as Neil Johnston (17 – Fort Smith, AR) finished second ahead of Scooter Scruggs (54 – Hensley, AR).

The last make-up feature was the USRA Modified A Feature. Andy Milliken (6M – Greenwood, AR) out-paced the field for the win ahead of Chad Wheeler (88 – Muskogee, OK) and Brandon Hunter (1/4 – Alma, AR).

First up on the agenda for the regular race program was heat racing for the Pure Stocks, IMCA Sport Mods, IMCA Stock Cars, IMCA Modifieds, Super Stocks and the USRA Modifieds. 94 cars took to the track during the heat races.

The intermission was next and gave everyone a chance to make a pit stop at the restrooms and get some of the concession food, including some world famous Menasco BBQ Ribs or a smoked bologna sandwich, an ice cold Coca-Cola soft drink to wash it down with and a funnel cake for desert. There was also over $100 in 50/50 funds given away at intermission, along with the trophy presentations and driver interviews for the previous race program winners.

TOP THREE – PART TWO

The Pure Stock A Feature hit the track first and Ethan Hunter (1/4 – Alma, AR) took home the win as Chris Perkins (88 – Rudy, AR) finished in second ahead of Jacob Cox (99 – Pocola, OK). There was one post-race technical DQ to the original race winner, Wesley Bourne (5 – Rock Island, OK) for not pulling the required cacuum.

The IMCA Sport Mod A Feature was up next and saw 14 year-old Kayden Menasco (49K – Dora, AR) take home the win over Rodney Cantrell (21C – Muskogee, OK) and Logan Ellis (118 – Wagoner, OK).

The IMCA Stock Cars took to the famous high banks next where Mike Wiseman (1 – Muskogee, OK) crossed the finish line first as Kevin Flock (9 – Muskogee, OK) and Keith Heaslet (5 – Indianola, OK) crossed the line in second and third respectively.

On track next was the IMCA Modifieds. Danny Womack (3 – Bixby, OK) took home the checkers as Kreg Dobson (28 – Henryetta, OK) and Mike Hansen (12H – Dickinson, ND) battled it out for second and third.

The Super Stock A Feature had Neil Johnson (17 – Fort Smith, AR) pick up the win over Cody Jones (92 – Fort Smith, AR) in second and Ray Phipps (L7 – Pocola, OK) in third.

The last A Feature of the night was for the USRA Modifieds where Chad Wheeler (88 – Muskogee, OK) emerged the victor after a long 10+ lap side by side battle with George Martin (15 – Fort Smith, AR). Chris Lewis (15L – Springdale, AR) finished in third place.

Complete A Feature results for the April 16TH point races are listed below. All race results, including heats and qualifying features, are available on our website at www.Tri-StateSpeedway.com. Current track point standings are available there, as well.

THE EVENT

POCOLA, OK (March 26TH, 2016) – The first regular night of weekly racing saw the gate and start times moved back one hour earlier and six different winners in the last two weeks take home the hardware for their A Feature wins. The weather also cooperated much, much better than the season opening races the previous weekend. The afternoon’s activities also featured an Easter egg hunt, free hot dogs and drinks, free photos, Easter baskets and candy from the Easter Bunny, plus drawings for free bicycles and Power Wheels for all of the kids under 13 who attended the races on Saturday.

The pre-race ceremonies started at about 6:15 PM with the invocation and a parade lap with the nation’s colors during the National Anthem.

First up on the agenda for the evening was heat racing for the Pure Stocks, IMCA Sport Mods, IMCA Stock Cars, IMCA Modifieds, Super Stocks and the ultra-fast TSS Modifieds.

The intermission was next and gave everyone a chance to make a pit stop at the restrooms and get some of the concession food, including some world famous Menasco BBQ smoked bologna sandwiches and an ice cold Coca-Cola soft drink. There was also some 50/50 funds given away at intermission, along with some free admission passes for future racing.

THE EVENT

POCOLA, OK (April 9TH, 2016) – The second regular night of weekly racing, after a one week break, saw the weather cooperating much better in the beginning of the evening’s activities. A nice southerly breeze greeted the fans and drivers as they arrived at the track. Unfortunately, Mother Nature felt that she needed to water some of her gardens and the rain showers arrived a few laps into the second feature race of the evening. This rain shower forced us to postpone the remaining part of that race and the other four features to be run at the beginning of next weekend’s program.

The pre-race ceremonies started at 6:07 PM with the invocation and a parade lap with the nation’s colors during the National Anthem.

First up on the agenda for the evening was heat racing for the Pure Stocks, IMCA Sport Mods, IMCA Stock Cars, IMCA Modifieds, Super Stocks and the ultra-fast TSS Modifieds. 83 cars took to the track during the heat races.

The intermission was next and gave everyone a chance to make a pit stop at the restrooms and get some of the concession food, including some world famous Menasco Seven Bean Soup and an ice cold Coca-Cola soft drink. There was also some 50/50 funds given away at intermission, along with the trophy presentations and driver interviews for the previous race program winners.

TOP THREE

The Pure Stock A Feature hit the track first and Wesley Bourne (5 – Rock Island, OK) took home the win as the previous winner, Chris Perkins (88 – Rudy, AR) finished in second ahead of Austin Farnam (119 – Fort Smith, AR). There was one post-race technical DQ to Josh Asher for a steering quickener.

The IMCA Sport Mod A Feature was up next and saw the first few laps completed before the rain shower halted the racing action. This feature will be the first race at the next race program and will start where the race was red flagged.

Complete A Feature results are listed below. All race results, including heats and qualifying features, are available on our website at www.Tri-StateSpeedway.com. Current track point standings are available there, as well.

THE EVENT

POCOLA, OK (March 20TH, 2016) – The weather people were mostly wrong all weekend for the 37th Annual Cecil Harlan Memorial Kegger presented by The Mower Shop, Inc. and benefitting the local Make-A-Wish Foundation Mid-South chapter. Practice on the 17TH was as predicted, weather-wise, with over 70 cars on hand. Then the rains came on the 18TH. What was supposed to be a few small quick showers turned into over an inch of rain and wiped out qualifying, which pushed everything forward one day. Qualifying on the 19TH was, as predicted, very windy and cold. The finals on the 20TH was supposed to be sunny and no wind. There was sun at times, but it stayed windy all afternoon. Weatherman’s grade for the weekend? D.

The finals afternoon kicked off after hot laps with an interview with the owner of The Mower Shop, Inc. about their promotion of giving away a free Grasshopper mower with their Make-A-Wish Foundation activities.

A remembrance of the late Cecil Harlan was read. Cecil was the former owner and promoter for more than 20 years of Tri-State Speedway and passed in 2011, after a battle with Lou Gehrig’s Disease. That was followed by the invocation and a parade lap with the nation’s colors during the National Anthem. The first green flag of the afternoon was waved by Tamyra Hanna, Cecil’s daughter.

First up on the last day of competition was the five B Features for the cars not already locked into the A Feature from the previous day of qualifying, where the top eight cars were set. This was followed by a short hot lap session for those locked in cars.

The intermission gave everyone a chance to stretch their legs and get some of the concession food, including some world famous Menasco BBQ and a hot beverage to wash it all down with. There was also some 50/50 funds given away at intermission, along with some Frisbees tossed into the stands with free food and drink items, as well as free admission passes for future racing.

Also during intermission there was a collection taken for the Skelton family whose car hauler caught fire early on Sunday causing a complete loss of their race car, hauler and tow vehicle. They also lost clothing and other personal items inside the hauler. We will post information soon on how you can help this family in their time of need.

TOP THREE

The Pure Stock A Feature hit the track first and Dylan Johnson (2321) took home the win as Jalen Brewton (41B – Alma, AR) finished in second ahead of Chris Perkins (88 - Rudy, AR). These were actually the fifth, sixth and seventh place cars across the finish line. However, the top four cars were all DQ’d for spring spacers.

The IMCA Sport Mod A Feature was up next and saw Aaron Scroggins (1/4 – Neosho, MO) pick up the win as Steve Butler (40 – Siloam Springs, AR) finished in second and Camden Perry (14C - Lincoln, AR) in third. There was also a tech DQ in this class on for a trailing arm violation and also a DQ for an engine set back violation.

Next up was the IMCA Stock Car A Feature that saw Kyle Slader (19S - Muskogee OK) pick up his first win of the afternoon ahead of Kris Vaughn (35) and Andrew Bohanan (33R – Stigler, OK).

The Super Stock A Feature rolled out next and saw Kyle Slader (19S - Muskogee OK), win his second feature of the afternoon as Tony Anglin (327 – Walnut Ridge, AR) and Brint Hartwick (9 – Red Bud, AR) finished in second and third, respectively.

The IIMCA Modified A feature saw Jeff James (71) take home the $2,000 paycheck for the win while Tate Cole (89 – Fort Gibson, OK) finished in second ahead of Richie Tosh (11).

The TSS Modified A feature was up last with Kenny Gaddis (2) taking home the checkers ahead of Myles Newman (III – Alma, AR) and Brent Holman (17 – Rogers, AR) in third.

There was also a $100 Cecil Harlan Hard Charger Award presented by Slader Race Cars in the IMCA Sport Mod class that was awarded to Steve Butler (40 - Siloam Springs, AR).

The official information and flyer have been released for the 37th Annual Cecil Harlan Memorial Kegger presented by The Mower Shop and benefitting the local chapter of the Make-A-Wish® Foundation.

This year's event will feature over $29,000 in prize money and will be held at the legendary Tri-State Speedway in Pocola, Oklahoma on March 17th, 18th and 19th, 2016. As it has been for the previous 36 years, this event will kick-off another racing season on the famous high banks. This will be the second Kegger for track owner Carey Menasco and the first for track promoter Dan King. This Kegger will not only be the first official race of the 2016 season, but it will also be the first point race for all six of the regular weekly classes. It will also be a state and national point race for all three of our IMCA classes and a state, regional and national point race for the USRA-sanctioned TSS Modifieds.

For the Kegger, the Sport Mod class will also allow USRA B-Mods and Wissota MidWest Mods. Those two classes will have to remove their rear spoilers for the event. Northern and Southern IMCA Sport Mods will also be able to compete but the Southern division will be required to run either Hoosier H500 or IMCA 500 tires. These rules will allow all of the regional and national Sport Mod cars to compete on an equal playing field for this event. There will be no mixing of rules for this event. You must declare at first inspection which division/class/sanction that you are running and must compete in that division/class/sanction for the entire event with that car. Each driver is responsible for knowing the rules for their chosen division/class/sanction.

The Pure Stocks will be competing for $500 to win with no entry fee and the IMCA Stocks will be competing for $800 to win also with no entry fee. The Super Stocks and the Sport Mods will both be competing for $1,000 to win with only a $50 entry fee. The TSS Modifieds also only have just a $50 entry fee, but will be competing for $1,500 to win while the IMCA Modifieds will be competing for a $2,000 paycheck with just a $100 entry fee. Last year's event brought in drivers from six states, including Kansas, Missouri and Iowa, to compete and we are expecting as many or even more for this year's action.

The event starts on Thursday, the 17th, will consist of an open practice session for all six classes from 6 PM to 9 PM. Pit gates will open at 4 PM with the grandstands opening at 5 PM. Grandstand admission will be free for everyone on Thursday and pit passes will only be $15.

Tri-State Speedway track promoter Dan King has officially announced the 2016 class information. Tri-State Speedway will be hosting races weekly in six different classes. These will include classes for both the novice and advanced racer and will include both stock-bodied cars and open wheel modifieds.

The track will continue as an IMCA sanctioned track with three classes competing in 2016. These will include the IMCA Stock Car, IMCA Sport Mods and the IMCA Modifieds. All three of these classes will require a 2016 IMCA license to compete weekly and to be eligible for local track points and awards, plus state, regional and national championship points and awards.

The Pure Stocks and Super Stocks will compete this season for local track points and awards, as well as a Top 10 point fund and will require a $25 registration fee to be paid no later than April 30th, 2016. A driver must also compete in 70% of the eligible point races for these two classes in order to receive Top 10 point fund money.

The final class that will run on a weekly basis in 2016 is the USRA Modifieds. This means that drivers in this class will be required to purchase either a yearly license, or temporary license each week, from USRA to be eligible to compete. These licenses are available at the track each week, This will make the drivers eligible for not only local track points and awards, but also state, regional and national awards from USRA.

With the winter racing break getting ever closer to being over, it is only seven weeks to the annual car show and the first practice session of the 2016 season at the legendary facility in Pocola, Oklahoma.
